Warsaw Chess Festival

The 2022 Warsaw Chess Festival contains two memorial tournaments:

 

Jan Macieja Memorial - blitz

(July 10, 2023)

 

Miguel Najdorf Memorial - classical chess

(July 11-19, 2023)

9. Tournament groups and entry fees (including rating charges):

 

Jan Macieja Memorial

 

All players will take part in a single tournament with numerous special prizes in rating groups, for women, juniors, and seniors.

 

The tournament will be FIDE rated.

 

Entry fee: 60 PLN (including rating charge).

 

Free entry: Grandmasters, Woman Grandmasters

 

Miguel Najdorf Memorial

Tournaments:

A – Open for players rated 2000 and higher

B – Open for players rated 1600-1999

C – Open for players rated below 1600

 

 

A Tournament

For players rated 2000 and higher

 

Entry fee: 240 PLN (including rating charge).

 

The Festival Director has the right to allow several players rated 1900 – 1999 to take part in the A Tournament. The entry fee for those players is 300 PLN.

 

Free entry: Grandmasters, Woman Grandmasters.

 

The tournament will be FIDE rated. GM, IM, WGM, WIM norms are available.

 

B Tournament

For players rated 1600-1999

 

Entry fee: 200 PLN (including rating charge).

 

The tournament will be FIDE rated. National category and title norms are available.

 

C Tournament

For players rated below 1600

 

Entry fee: 180 PLN (including rating charge).

 

The tournament will be FIDE rated. National category and title norms are available.





10. System and rules of play, time control:

Jan Macieja Memorial

A single tournament for all players, Swiss system, 11 rounds, time rate G-3'+2'' (3 minutes for the game for each player with a 2-second increment per move).

The order of places for players with the same score

Tie-break criteria:

 

a) Buchholz cut-1

b) Buchholz

c) number of victories

d) progressive score

e) drawing of lots

 

Remarks:

- A player can be late for the game and start it before the time on his/her clock expires.

- A player forfeiting a game will be excluded from the tournament unless he/she presents a justification before the end of the round.

- FIDE Laws of Chess (Appendix B: Blitz including B.4) are applied in the tournament.

- Players can possess electronic devices if they are completely turned off.

 

Miguel Najdorf Memorial

 

A, B and C tournaments: Swiss system, 9 rounds.

Time rate:

 

A, B and C groups: 90 min. for 40 moves + 30 min. for the rest of the game, with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 1.

 

Tie-break criteria:

 

a) Buchholz cut-1

d) progressive score

e) drawing of lots

 

Actual FIDE rules will be applied in all tournaments.

 

Remarks:

  1. A player who arrives at the round more than 30 minutes after the start of the round loses his/her game by forfeit.

  2. A player forfeiting a game will be excluded from the tournament unless he/she presents a justification by the end of the round.

  3. The Festival is a tournament minding to keep the image of chess as a model of a fair competition. Significant violations of ethics and principles of sportsmanship will not be tolerated. To protect players from unfair behaviour of other participants of the event, according to FIDE recommendations, the Chief Arbiter shall:

 

a) declare a game lost by both players if he is sure the result of the game was pre-arranged. The evaluation of the evidence of the collusion remains at the discretion of the Chief Arbiter;

b) order, in agreement with the Director of the Festival, a search of a player and his belongings if there is a justified suspicion that the player may be using forbidden assistance from an electronic device or a third party.

 

  1. A complete ban of access to mobile phones is applied at the tournament. A player may have his/her mobile phone, completely turned off, in his/her bag, which must not be picked up and walked with, or in his/her jacket, which shall remain hanged on the player’s chair throughout the whole game.

A player having an electronic device (particularly mobile phone) in a pocket of his/her clothes or with him/her in another way (on a belt etc.) when playing, loses the game. The organizer provides for random inspections of electronic devices in the playing room and outside the playing room, e.g. in the toilets, corridor of the playing venue etc.

The same restrictions concern smart watches and similar devices.

 

11. Conditions of participation in the Festival (Jan Macieja Memorial and Miguel Najdorf Memorial):

 

a) Self-registration on the website http://www.poloniachess.pl/warsaw_chess_festival/turniej_2023/ not later than 10.06.2023 or submitting an application with the following data: tournament group, name, surname, country, birthdate, e-mail address, phone number (optional), FIDE rating - to the e-mail address .

 

b) Payment of the entry fee not later than 10.06.2023:

Please clearly indicate which players the payment concerns.

 

 

 

c) Registration of players after the deadline, i.e. between 11.06 and 09.07.2023, will only be possible if free spots are available, by submitting applications to the e-mail address . Entry fees for players registered after the 10.06.2023 deadline are increased by 50 PLN.

 

d) Players registered on 10.07.2023 (J.Macieja Memorial) or 11.07.2023 (M.Najdorf Memorial) will be allowed to play from Round 2 unless the Organizer, in accordance with the Chief Arbiter, decides otherwise, and only if free spots are available.

e) Players who don’t have FIN (FIDE Identification Namber) shall indicate in their application: Name and surname, place and date of birth, contact e-mail address. Foreign players must obtain a FIN from their national chess federation. The lack of a FIDE number or data enabling its assignment makes it impossible to participate in the Festival.

 

12. Hotel Information.

 

a) Organizers' official hotel is Hotel IBIS Stare Miasto **** (ul. Muranowska 2, 300m from the playing venue).

 

Players invited by the organizers will be accommodated in Hotel IBIS Stare Miasto.

Depending on the availability, the organizers will accommodate other participants of the Festival in that hotel, too.

Prices per day (rooms with a bathroom, free Wi-Fi, breakfast included):

  • single room - 300 PLN (ca. 65 euros);

  • twin room (two separate beds) - 180 PLN (ca. 38 euros) per person

Attention: the number of places is limited. They will be provided in the order of applications.

Remarks regarding the prizes (Jan Macieja Memorial and Miguel Najdorf Memorial):

a) Prizes will be paid out in PLN

b) All prizes are shown before taxes, the income tax of 10% will be deducted, with the exception of prizes below 2000 PLN, which are free of taxation, according to the Polish law.

c) Prizes are not shared.

d) Not more than 2 prizes can be given to a player. If he/she wins more prizes, he/she will receive two highest of them; if the values of the alternative prizes are equal, the player receives, if applicable, prizes in the following order:

I) for the overall place;

II) for the best girl (in the youngest of applicable age categories);

III) for the best junior (in the youngest of applicable age categories);

IV) for the best senior born in 1963 or earlier;

V) for the best woman;

VII) in rating groups (the lowest applicable)

e) Special prizes will be awarded only if at least 3 players participate in the particular age or rating group.

f) Prizes not received personally at the closing ceremony of the Jan Macieja Memorial and Miguel Najdorf Memorial are forfeited.

15. Special Conditions (please send your requests to the Festival Director, Maria Macieja: ) .

A player getting special conditions is obliged to play all his/her games (or win by forfeit in case his/her opponent doesn't show up).

16. Visas:

a) Invitations for obtaining visas are only issued for players who have paid due entry fees.

17. Insurance

Players take out their own insurance for the duration of the competition.

18. Privacy policy

a) The principles of the privacy policy in chess events organized by Gen. Kazimierz Sosnkowski Chess Foundation are posted on the Foundation website at: http://www.poloniachess.pl/fundacja_szachowa/polityka_prywatnosci/

b) Each participant of the Warsaw Chess Festival is obliged to read the above-mentioned principles, which in practice means:
- consent to the processing of the player's personal data for the purposes of organizing and conducting the Warsaw Chess Festival;
- free use of the participant's image (including that of a competitor, accompanying person, fan) in promotional and informational materials related to the organization and conduct of the Warsaw Chess Festival.



19. Final statements

a) A player entering the Festival thereby accepts the provisions stated in this General Information.

b) In cases not covered by the present regulations, the final decision belongs to the Chief Arbiter (in competition-related matters) and the Festival Director (in organizational matters).

c) The final interpretation of this General Information belongs to the Chief Arbiter (in competition-related matters) and the Festival Director (in organizational matters).
